Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) Announced

June 25, 2009 - President Obama will be signing the Cash for Clunkers Bill, now called “CARS” this afternoon.  NHTSA should have program up and running Late July.

June 23, 2009 - The NHTSA has updated their CARS website (http://cars.gov), the only Federal website for the cash voucher program.  The latest information on the website indicates that the program implementation will be completed in Late July.   The exact wording from the Cars.gov website advises consumers “You may want to contact your local dealer in mid-July.”  This is in slight conflict with the wording of the bill that says cars purchased from July 1, 2009 – November 1, 2009 will qualify. June 22, 2009 – The program that the Senate and House has called the “Cash for Clunkers“ bill for the last six months has a new name.  NHTSA is now calling the cash voucher program: Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS).  The NHTSA has also posted a copy of the law for consumers to read.  View as a PDF . The CARS website has answered a few questions, which have been added on our FAQ Page.  Please read the FAQ page carefully.  The only Federal website for the CARS program fuel MPG data  is located at http://cars.gov.

Consumers should be able to start purchasing cars by Late July.
